I was discussing with my gym trainer how many people at the moment are feeling very ready for a break.
He is a young fellow, originally from England.
He observed that a northern hemisphere Christmas is slower and more inward focused.
Whereas here in Australia it tends to hot and busy.
Very yang – in his words! – where a white Christmas is more yin.
In the yin yang dynamic balance way of the world, it is the busyness that can flag what is being neglected.
When we pay attention!!!
Similarly, it is from stillness that movement arises.
Out here, at the solstice, the peak of the silly season, perhaps you can feel where you are at?
Here’s a simple practice for those moments when you turn up somewhere, having walked there purposefully and intentionally, and having arrived, have no recollection of what you’re doing there.
I know I am not alone in this awkward experience.
Stand there for a moment and breathe. Soften and relax as much as you’re able.
Ie, see if you can stop berating yourself for being so incompetent as not to remember this simple thing.
That voice, give it a rest for a moment.
Feet on the floor, perhaps slightly amused at your predicament.
9 times out of 10, as you breathe and wait a few seconds, you’ll remember what you came for.
It surprises and delights me every time.
It’s hard to make breathing sexy, since we do it all the time.
And equally, a sign of gentle pleasurable arousal may be a tangible shift to slower deeper breathing.
Prolonging the moment.
So it is this breathing space i am wishing you for the coming days of crazy making.
When distracted to return to yourself, and also to prolong those truly wonderful moments.
Remembering why you’re here.
Season’s greetings.
Wishing you gentle, nourishing holidays.
Please take one (a holiday that is)
Turns out
Breathing space
to remember why you’re really, truly, deeply here
is what I have to offer.
