What this pain taught me about moving forward

Sometimes, in moments of discomfort or confusion, I still find myself snapping into black-and-white thinking. It’s like my brain is desperate to sort everything into categories: this is good, that is bad. This is the right thing to do, that is a terrible mistake. Especially when something hurts—physically, emotionally, existentially—it’s tempting to treat the pain as proof that something is wrong. But that story can be too simple. Pain doesn’t always mean damage. Sometimes, it means change.

Case in point: I recently hurt my hand. At first, the pain made me freeze—I stopped moving it, afraid of making it worse. But after seeing a doctor and getting an x-ray, I was reassured: there’s no structural damage. Movement is not just safe—it’s healthy. Encouraged, even. And so, with that new understanding, I started moving it again. It still hurt, but now it was a different kind of pain—growth pain, stretch pain. Weirdly satisfying pain. And the conviction that this movement is good for me has shifted the whole experience. The pain didn’t change. But the meaning of it did.

This got me wondering—how many other parts of my life am I still reacting to as if pain equals danger? How often do I assume something is broken or wrong just because it’s hard? Sometimes, what we need isn’t a fix—it’s a reframe. A chance to ask better questions. To seek out the x-ray, the history, the context. Because with the right kind of information, our whole relationship with pain—and even with the thing or person causing it—can shift.

For your curious mind 🧠

Where in your life are you assuming something is “bad” just because it hurts? Is there any new information—medical, emotional, historical—you could seek out that might offer a reframe?

For your connected heart 💗

Can you soften toward the part of you that’s been bracing against pain or discomfort? Let it know you’re listening. You’re not trying to push it away, just trying to understand what it’s been carrying.

For your creative body ✋

Try a small, gentle movement today toward something that has felt off-limits. Physically, emotionally, socially—just a test movement. Not to fix, but to feel. What changes when you approach it with the conviction that the discomfort might actually be part of healing?

✨ An Invitation to Wonder

Think back to a time when pain or discomfort led you to deeper discernment.

What did that pain teach you to say no to?

Or yes to?

Who or what became a thou instead of an it?

(And how did that shift your story?)

a pop anthem that gently says: it’s okay to speak, move, and grow—even when your voice shakes or your hand hurts.

Maybe the very bravest thing to do is ask for help.

Dear Sensitive Soul 💛

You are allowed to ignore most of this.

Truly.

You are still whole, still worthy, still wise.

Without clear no’s, we can’t feel the truth of our yes.

If nothing here lands today, let it drift.

But if one thing does tug at you—

maybe a sentence, a song lyric, a small bodily nudge—

let yourself follow that one thread.

That’s enough.

More than enough.

Affirmation for tender Women

You are allowed to be in pain and still hold the possibility of healing—your hurt is real, and so is your strength.

Many women love to care deeply, even when it costs them more than they can afford.

They are conditioned to minimize their pain, explain it away, or carry on as if nothing’s wrong.

Which undermines our ability to honour what’s been lost, listen to what still matters, and take the time we need to recover with dignity.

Remember you can slow down, feel what’s true for you, and choose your next step from a place of self-trust—not pressure.

I trust you to know when something is no longer yours to carry—and when you’re ready, to let it go in your own time.

Inside Recalibrate for Joy you’ll find a gentle audio guide that meets you in the thick of it, helping you shift from survival into quiet, courageous clarity—so you can move forward without abandoning yourself.

Notes on a place for pain

Now I would like to add in a story about the pain in my finger, and how my relationship with it has changed.

Because i have the advice of hte doctor, and the visual of hte x ray, i know there is no structural damage.

So movement is healthy, even though painful.

And so important that it is encouraged to take painkillers if necessary to move.

But for me, so far, simply the conviction that it is safe and important to move my hand actually renders the meaning of the pain differently – this is healthy growth pain, and therefore weirdly satisfying.

So not all pain is bad.   Discerning deeper situation, taking the time, asking the questions, access to the resources to get the information needed is all important.

Then the same information has a different meaning.

Sensory experience is in my body.

The thing is an entity.

I cannot speak about its experience

Only mine.

Perceive it as blue

Hard, cool, disk.  Plastic.

And it is an entity with a history i can infer, and some of it is shared because has been in my possession for some years now.

Losing my way here.

Duality – I thou vs I it.  Moieties

The notes i did not take are regarding perceiving the other as thou

Intimately, friendly

Rather than it – alien, object, fundamentally different

Thou – in relationship

There is something here that is reflected in the montessori journey of the child

From working with materials (it) guided by caring adult – also possibly it or thou

(oh my goodness, working with materials – the experience i have is internalising the material experience)

That’s a montessori moment right there

To meeting others with a shared internal logic and working together as humans.

I and thou.

And possibly extending that back to things in the end – they have their own existential space/consciousness.

They affect us.

My story of the block in waking up the hands with betty martin.

I can do this now.

Sensory experience is in my body.

The thing is an entity.

I cannot speak about its experience

Only mine.

Perceive it as blue

Hard, cool, disk.  Plastic.

And it is an entity with a history i can infer, and some of it is shared because has been in my possession for some years now.

Losing my way here.

Oh, but duality is what facilitates change.

If there is no separation, there is no progress.

Gross generalisations.

But also like letting the poo(p) go.

Discerning the healthy action

Letting go what is not needed

Though it has been part of me, literally.

Although not quite with poo.

Bacteria in my gut are part of the organisation of me.

Dead things need to go.

Dead rice.

Power to make material world change.

Is through duality

Friendship – holding both this and that.  Here and there.   Now and then.

Can shift between and feel which one is a better fit

Me and not me.

Me and no longer me.

Discernment.

Jesuit discernment

Both options may be good.

But which will bring more joy and alignment.

Thou alive.   It not alive?    Manufactured > symbol / token?

Quality of engagement.

Dont have to choose

Friends with both.

Visit each as required

Maintain both relationships?

Complementary

Moieties

Take care of what is permitted

Trust others to take care of theirs

Demarcation

Tasks and accountability for all.

Interconnected

Interdependent

Rather than independent
